Academicians have been reminded to work towards ensuring that outputs of research are converted into valuable intellectual property assets.
This formed the conclusion of the 2nd University Lecture by Dr. Umar Bindir, Director General, National Office of Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) Abuja, which held recently at the Federal University Otuoke.
Preceding the Lecture was a courtesy visit by the 3-man NOTAP Team led by Engr. J.U.L Nwosa to the VC Federal University Otuoke, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko in his office.
During the visit Engr. J.U.L Nwosa thanked the Vice Chancellor for his time and extended the regrets and apologies of Dr. Umar Bindir, DG NOTAP who was scheduled to deliver the lecture for being unavoidably absent.
Engineer Nwosa disclosed the desire of NOTAP to have an office in FUO adding that as the University is a new one it is easier to start the implementation of Science and Technology innovations for better results.
He further presented the VC with some manuals and literature on Intellectual Properties Technology Transfer for the University library.
The Vice Chancellor in his response thanked the visitors for coming and expressed the readiness of FUO to inculcate the culture of University-Industry Partnership within the Institution.
In his words “We welcome you, we are happy that you are here, we are waiting to have the lecture and look further to partnering with you”.
Reacting to the request by NOTAP, Prof. Aluko said the University has been approached by many Federal agencies, for an office within the University.
“For now, all we are trying to do is compile all the requirements from Federal agencies and see how to create a technology office that will be able to serve them all” he said.
Adding that, “as a new University we cannot provide a separate office for all the Federal Government Agencies because we do not have enough facilities”.
The delegates afterwards proceeded to the venue of the lecture which was on “The Role of Science and Technology in National Development” to be delivered by Dr. Umar Bindir, Director General, National Office for Technology Acquisition and promotions.
In his lecture, Dr. Umar Bindir who was represented by Engineer J. Nwosa, Director of Technology Acquisition and Research Department NOTAP laid emphasis on the importance of science and technology in National development, stressing that in this 21st century, science and technology has proven to be the pivotal point for innovation and technological advancement.
The speaker reacted to some questions after the lecture and was led by Dr. Sepribo Lawson-Jack, Head, Institutional Advancement and Ms. Mercy Ekott, Head, Media Public Relations Unit on a facility tour of the University.
Areas toured were, the Faculty Building, Laboratories, Library, Administrative Building and the Uncompleted Skills Acquisition Centre of the Niger Delta Ministry.
Dr. Lawson-Jack later led the visitors to the Vice Chancellor’s Office where they met with the Management Team of FUO.
