Vice Chancellor Federal University Otuoke, Prof Mobolaji Aluko has charged the Sports and Recreation Unit of the Institution to utilize various competitive Sports especially soccer organized by the Unit to form teams that can represent FUO at all levels of sports, with the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) as prime target.
Prof Aluko gave the tall order 6th August 2014 at the final of the second 5 – aside Beach Soccer Competition.
“I thank the Head, Sports and Recreation Unit Mrs. Helen Wokoro and her team for organizing a second Beach Soccer Competition, I also want the University to participate effectively in football at the next NUGA games, not just any team but a competitive Football Team” he stated.
The Vice Chancellor who was Guest of Honour at the event reiterated the commitment of management to Sports and Recreation, stating that it is an integral part of the training process for students adding that the Sports and Recreation Unit of the Institution was created to improve Sports and competitiveness in the life of students and these have so far been achieved through the tournament.
Prof. Aluko while congratulating the Beach Soccer Champions for their victory commended visitors and sponsors of the tournament for their contributions, disclosing managements’ desire to partner with stakeholders that share same ideology with the University.
Earlier, defending champions of FUO 5 – aside Beach Soccer Competition (Political Science Department) successfully defended their title against Physics Department and emerged champions of the 2nd Edition of the football tournament which ended in a 3 – 0 win.
The first half ended at 2 – nil with the goals scored by Tekena Nemi and Team Captain – Barclays Sunny while the 3rd goal was converted in the second half by Dobini Jonah Preye.
Although Physics Department Team gave a fair fight and made a few goal attempts, the defending champions dominated the game making their opponents unable to score.
The match officiated by Mr. Preye Okoyan as centre referee, Mr. Ralph Okoli as match official, Mr. Bob Emmanuel and Nathaniel Ukodei as linesmen was adjudged to be fair.
All 12 departments within the two Faculties of FUO contested for the 5 – aside Beach Soccer Competition sponsored by Barrister Egele, the immediate past Attorney General of Bayelsa State, Chief Kaku Innocent, CEO Best Link Nigeria Ltd. and Staff of the Sports and Recreation Unit of the University.
A trophy and medals were presented to the Gold, Silver and Bronze award winners at the end of the match.
History Department Team who had earlier defeated Accounting and Finance Department 4 – 2 in a penalty shoot-out in a third place match were presented. The bronze medal by the Head, Media and Public Relations Unit, Ms. Mercy Ekott.
Head of Department, Social Sciences, Dr. Evans Eze presented the Silver medal to the Physics Department squad, in the second position, one of the sponsors, Chief Barrister Egele presented the Gold medal to the Champions while the Vice Chancellor handed the Gold trophy to the captain of the winning team.
The Main Campus was agog with jubilation as the students expressed their joy, carting away laurels to the admiration of spectators.
In another development after the presentation of the trophy, the VC inaugurated a football supporters club for Federal University Otuoke.
In his words “By the authority bestowed on me as the premier VC of FUO, I am happy to inaugurate you as the official supporters club of FUO”.
The supporters club which is to be known as “FUO Supporters Club” Prof. Aluko said will accompany and cheer the institution’s contingent during competitions. He further adviced them to practice and be of good conduct while commending them and expressing his satisfaction with their display and showmanship during the match.
