“This scheme seeks to train 92 potential construction workers referred to as Artisans with the view of enhancing their proficiency in the Construction Industry”
These were the words of the Deputy Manager, Capacity Building Division of Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board during his speech at the orientation exercise organized for participants of the NCDMB/FUO Artisan Training 2014.
The event is to kick start the – 14-week Training exercise scheduled to be in two parts: 6 weeks tutorials on entrepreneurial skills and, 8 weeks practical work from 8 consultants selected by NCDMB.
Speaking at the orientation exercise, the Registrar FUO Mr. David Suowari advised the trainees to take the exercise seriously. Welcoming them to the University he concluded by saying the training is the first of its kind in Nigeria and beneficiaries should make the best of the opportunity.
Also, speaking at the event Head, Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Unit, Dr. Sam Ebie appreciated the sponsorship of the programme, expressing gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko for his contributions in making it a reality.
The orientation which was conducted for two (2) days also had some consultants in attendance, with a total of 90 Trainees made up of 9 females and 81 males all drawn from the 8 Local Government Areas of Bayelsa State.
The 8 skills set to be embarked upon are in Masonry, Carpentry, Scaffolding, Electrical Works, Welding, Tilling Works, Plumbing and Painting.
It was discovered that NCDMB being the project promoter of the NCDMB Head Office Building project intends to enhance the employability of the candidates during the commencement of the building project, this is to support the 3 stages of the training programme; Train, Test (Practice) and certification of selected trainees in order to prepare them for a career in the construction industry.
The orientation exercise gave the trainees the opportunity to react and they unanimously thanked NCDMB and FUO for their efforts towards the exercise promising to employ their best to fulfill the purpose at the end.
They also demanded that organizers should provide them with Sports and Media recreational facilities.
Other dignitaries who made presentations during the orientation exercise are, the Assistant Dean, Student Life FUO, Dr. Marcellina Offoha, The Senior Medical Director FUO, Mr. Ben Oputa.
Others were the Head, Media and Public Relations Unit, Ms. Mercy Ekott, Hall Master Male Hostels, FUO, Dr. Joseph Omoro, A representative of Hallmark Global Petroleum Ltd, Mrs. Cecilia Aigbunoje and a representative of Investors Hub Limited, Chief R.K Goswami
The 90 Trainees who have been provided with hostel accommodations by the University, are expected to take seriously the presentations made at the exercise.
