An advocacy has gone out for the establishment of a school of architecture in Federal University Otuoke.
Members of the Nigerian Institute of Architects Baylesa State Chapter, made the move while on a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko in his office.
Leader of the 12-Man delegation and Chairman of the body, Architect Stella Raine in her address, stated that the visit is primarily to sell the School of Architecture to FUO, noting that it will go a long way to launch the institution to limelight as there is no prominent School of Architecture within the Niger Delta Region.
She added that the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria strongly endorses their move.
Arch. Stella Raine also raised other strong points during the visit as she urged the VC to use FUO which is a citadel of learning to propagate quality standards through iconic architectural designs and structures.
According to her, a University is the place to have befitting buildings and FUO should not compromise standards in order to be at par with other Universities in the world.
In his response, the Vice Chancellor, Federal University Otuoke, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko charged them to draw up a curriculum within the next six months that will propagate an ideal School of Architecture in FUO.
“Let’s see what happens and consider it, let’s have a Department of Architecture to start off” he dropped.
He said, FUO is careful about starting too many schools or faculties but steadily working towards accreditation by NUC, which is why the institution is painstakingly engaging sound minds as lecturers and with Ph.D’s, standing currently at 60% as NUC requirement. “We just want to concentrate on few departments but concentrate on excellence” he landed.
Prof. Aluko while expressing the readiness of FUO to work with the Nigerian Institute of Architects showed them the land use plan of the University involving 200- Hectares of land occupied by the University.
The VC gave an assurance that high Architectural standards will be pursued in areas like painting motif, landscaping, greenery, vegetation and road networking within the campus.
“I cannot be VC in a University that the buildings are not good “, Prof. Aluko stated, to drive home his point.
He cited the recently completed female hostel at west campus as an edifice and pride of the University.
The director of Physical Planning and Development FUO, Arch. Sunmi Fajemisin was also present at the courtesy visit, and Head, Public Relations Ms. Mercy Ekott.
