The 4th edition of West Africa University Football and Hockey Championships of all Universities in the West African sub-region has commenced in The University of Nigeria Nsukka - UNN, Enugu State with the aim of promoting regional co-operation through sports.
The event so far has in attendance twenty six (26) Universities including Federal University Otuoke which is the only University among the newly established Universities in Nigeria participating in the games. For which the organizers hailed the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko for giving Team FUO the opportunity to make its first appearance in the games.
Declaring the sports event open, the Vice Chancellor, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Prof. Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba commended the efforts of those who conceived the idea of the sporting event in the West African sub-region noting that such vision will serve as a unifying force among member nations.
Prof. Ozumba said the motive of the University to host the 4th Sports Championship hinged on its philosophy of restoring the dignity of man, positing that the event will provide a platform for young budding University athletes from different Universities in the West African Sub-region to participate and display excellence in sporting skills and competence.
According to the VC of the first Indigenous University in Nigeria, West African University Games - WAUG will also provide both participants and spectators the opportunity to interact, socialize and make new friends with their counterparts from other Institutions.
Speaking earlier, the President, West Africa University Games, Prof. Kingsley Akpabio commended the UNN Vice Chancellor for hosting the event, he however, assured all participating Universities of his readiness to be fair to all.
Prof. Akpabio warned participating Universities against using machineries in their games saying that such will not be tolerated.
West Africa University Games started in 2001 at the University of Ghana, Lagon, the 2nd edition of the championship was held in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 2005 while the 3rd edition took place in Bayero University Kano in 2010.
Meanwhile, in the opening match of the football tournament, Team UNN trashed Team OAU 1-0 in Group A.
The Football tournament has eight(8) groups of competiting teams. Categorized from Group A to Group H, of which Team FUO is in Group F with DELSU, LAUTECH and UNIMAID as other group members. Team FUO is to play its first match against DELSU on Sunday 18th October,2015 by 4.00pm at the Akanu-Ibiam Football Stadium UNN.
