Vice chancellor, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko has inaugurated the first student union caretaker committee of Federal University Otuoke.
Inaugurating the 6 man Committee drawn from the pioneer Students, the Vice Chancellor said the committee’s mandate is to prepare grounds for an election of a substantive executive of the University’s students union.
The VC who said the event was another milestone in the historic life of the University enjoined the committee to pilot the affairs of the union within the ambit of stipulated University guidelines.
Prof. Aluko who cautioned against ethnicity warned the students that management will not tolerate ethnic segregation, intimidation and cult related acts during the election process.
Stressing that FUO is a Federal University, the VC said he is building a University devoid of ethnic bias with merit as the watchword.
The Registrar, Mr. David Suowari reeled out the modalities for the constitution of the caretaker committee members noting that 400 level students are eligible to vote their colleagues into the committee.
After the election by the students, six persons emerged to form the committee; Mr. Roland Abeng of Biochemistry got 100 votes elected by the caretaker committee members as chairman, Miss Faith Awharive from the department of Economic and Development studies emerged as secretary.
Other members are Mr. Agu Famous of Accounting department, Financial secretary, while Grace Chimezie of Physics department got 85 votes and was elected Treasurer, the Public Relations Officer of the committee went to Clinton Areprekumo of History and International relations while Rapheal Atimbo of English and Communications studies emerged as the provost.
The Registrar said the committee has a mandate of drafting a constitution for the students Union, and organizing elections for 200 and 300 level students.
The eligibility of caretaker committee members is determined by having a CGPA of 3.00 and above and clearance from and secret cult while their names will be forwarded to DSS for thorough screening.
The process of the election for the pioneer caretaker committee for the students Union was adjudged to be transparent, setting in motion the process for responsible Unionism among Federal University Otuoke students.
