It was a time of accountability, and sound dialogue when the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) Federal University Otuoke Chapter held her 4th congress while marking her one year Anniversary 20/2/2017.
SSANU EXCO and members comprising all non Teaching Senior Staff of FUO gathered at the auditorium of the Skills Acquisition Centre to celebrate achievements of one year since inception on 11th February 2016 and to reflect on shortcomings and how to overcome challenges in order to move to the next level.
The SSANU Chairman, FUO Chapter Comrade Joseph Kalizibe used the forum to brief members, informing them on the struggles of the union to address grievances on : salary disparities, pension remittances, earned allowances, hazard allowance, study leave, proper placement, conversion, regularization etc. The meeting ended after a session of interactions featuring questions, comments, remarks, commendations and recommendations.
Later at an interview with FUO Media, the SSANU Chairman, Comrade Joseph Kalizibe further spoke on the journey so far. According to him, one year is not sufficient to achieve all set objectives of the union with a 4 –year tenure, but all the same has recorded an impressive impact. He recounted the successes of EXCO including spearheading the setting up of the verification panel leading to the current regularization of staff, conversion interviews, FUO Enlightenment workshop with PENCOM on 7th September 2016, review of study leave grants and conditions etc. the setting up of a befitting SSANU secretariat etc.
He noted that although a lot still needs to be done, the Union remains dogged and resolute in the pursuit of better working conditions for members. The SSANU chairman expressed his appreciation to members for their solidarity, steadfastness and patience, calling for more support. He revealed that SSANU has an immediate plan of providing a soft loan/welfare package to members, and augmenting commuting from Tombia-Otuoke. Comrade Joseph Kalizibe reminded members to always report all anomalies to EXCO.
