Brief History of the Department

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies is one of the newly established Departments in the Faculty of the Humanities, Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. The Department was established and given the mandate to become operational with the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC) after a successful Resource Visitation in April 2023. With the employment of additional full time lecturers, with 80 percent of them with the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree in diverse specializations in Communication Studies, and the admission of its pioneer set of students, the Department is fully set to commence full academic activities in the 2023/2024 Academic Session.

Our Department of Journalism and Media Studies is a product of the unbundling of the Mass Communication discipline sweeping across Nigeria’s academic landscape currently. With our team of academic and non-teaching staff, we are poised to deliver, both in the theoretical and practical terms, the full benefits of the ever widening possibilities in the Communication Studies’ discipline with cutting-edge digital technologies. With the coming on stream of the Campus Radio, students would be able to demonstrate the classroom theories. Join us, and sure you would not regret it.
