Prof. Adewale Dosunmu
Professor Adewale Dosunmu was born in Isale Eko, Lagos into the Dosunmu Royal family of Lagos. He attended Baptist Primary School, Yaba, Lagos for his primary education between 1956 and 1963. He thereafter gained admission into the prestigious King’s College, Lagos in 1964 where he obtained his West African School Certificate with distinctions in all the subjects taken in 1968 and the Cambridge Advanced Level for his Higher School Certificate in 1970. Professor Dosunmu was admitted to the University of Ibadan in 1971 and graduated in 1975 with a bachelor<s degree in Petroleum Engineering. He was among the pioneer 8 graduates of Petroleum Engineering in Nigeria and indeed Africa. Professor Dosunmu was deployed to Rivers State for his National Youth Service Corps in 1975 and taught at the then College of Arts & Science, Port Harcourt and was retained as a lecturer on completion of his youth service. Professor Dosunmu got married to his soul mate in 1976 and also established a drilling company Wedcon Nigeria Ltd during this period. Professor Adewale Dosunmu enrolled in the MEng program at the University of Port Harcourt in 1984 under the tutelage of Professor Chi. Ikoku of blessed memory and obtained his MEng in 1985 and PhD in 1991. He joined the services of the University of Port Harcourt in November 1991 as a lecturer 1 and rose to the position of Professor of Petroleum Engineering in 2005. He has served the University as a Head of Petroleum Engineering Department, Dean, School of Advanced Engineering & Technology, Dean, Graduate School of Engineering & Technology, Director SIWES Unit, Member of Senate and several Senate Committees.
He occupied the Shell Aret Adams Chair in Petroleum Engineering in the University of Port Harcourt between 2008 and 2016 and he is the author of several books and more than 150 technical papers that have been published in International Journals. Professor Dosunmu is currently President & Managing Consultant of Wedcon Nigeria Limited and Head, Department of Petroleum & Gas Engineering, Federal University, Otuoke, Nigeria. He has extensive industry experience enabling him to blend theory with actual field experience. Professor Dosunmu is a recognized international expert in Well Engineering in the special area of Geomechanics and well bore stability management. He was the Section Chairman of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Section 103 Port Harcourt in 2002 and he is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Nigeria Council. He has been an SPE Distinguished Lecturer on two occasions, (2007/2008, and 2011/2012) to several countries to make presentations on Wellbore Stability, Well Design and Construction. These countries include India, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Congo, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Qatar, Oman, Iran, Iraq and Cote d’Ivoire.. He has also taught short courses for the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Nigeria Council. He has supervised over 20 PhD students, more than 100 MEng and hundreds of undergraduate students in his over 3 decades in the university. Professor Dosunmu has led research teams that have made pioneering work in the areas of drilling fluids, wellbore instability management and well control.
Professor Dosunmu is a member of several professional societies including the Society of Petroleum Engineers International, the Nigerian Society of Engineers and is a COREN registered Engineer. He has been on COREN accreditation teams to many Universities in Nigeria and abroad and he was a visiting Professor to the University of Petroleum & Energy, Dehradun, North East India and Petro Bras University, Macae, Brazil, Institute of Petroleum Studies, University of Port Harcourt and the Centre of Excellence in Geosciences and Petroleum Engineering, University of Benin amongst others,. He was also an external examiner to the University of Benin, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, University of Science & Technology, Port Harcourt, University of Lagos, Covenant University and the University of Mines, Ghana. Professor Adewale Dosunmu delivered the first course at the inception of IPS in 2003. He has also been the recipient of the Best Lecturer award in both the MSc and Post graduate Diploma programs of the Institute for more than half of the period of existence of the IPS. He delivered his Inaugural Lecture titled “GAMBLERS’ RUIN- THE DRILLER’S ALBATROSS” which is currently a reference material in many overseas Universities on 4th December 2014.
Professor Dosunmu is a recipient of several awards including SPE Distinguished award, SPE Century club award, Distinguished award by SPE Lou Ark section (USA), SPE Midland Odessa (USA), SPE Eastern Venezuela, SPE Lima, Peru and SPE Tehran section, SPE Muscat, Oman, SPE North East India, SPE Manila, Philippines, SPE Hanoi, Vietnam, SPE Africa Regional award for Drilling & Well Completion, University of Port Harcourt Special Research Award and service awards by SPE Section 103 Port Harcourt of which he was the section Chairman in 2002. His research interests are in Well Engineering particularly in wellbore stability, Petroleum Economics, Natural Gas Engineering, Environment ,Climate change and sustainable development He is happily married to Dr (.Mrs.) Roberta Tekena Dosunmu and they are blessed with many children and grandchildren. Professor Dosunmu holds several patents which include Database for wellbore stability management (2015), Real time kick detection software, Invert emulsion mud Calculator (2016), Carbon Nano particle deployment in drilling fluid formulation (2018) Optiwell wellbore stability management tool (2016) currently deployed in Shell well operations. He is a consultant to several oil companies in Nigeria and overseas.
