Prof. Diri I. Teilanyo

BRIEF PROFILE 

Professor Diri Teilanyo holds a B.A.Ed degree in Education-English, an M.A. and a Ph.D. in English and Literature. Besides his academic degrees, Professor Teilanyo also has several professional qualifications. He has both the Professional Certificate and the Professional Diploma in Public Relations as well as a Certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution, namely Mediation and Conciliation. Therefore, he is a chattered public relations practitioner as well as a chattered mediator and conciliator.

He started his working career in University of Benin, Benin City in 1991 as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of English and Literature after doing his National Youth Service (NYSC) in the same Department, and steadily grew through the ranks in to become a full Professor of English Language in 2011. He earned two consecutive accelerated promotions during his growth.

 Professor Teilanyo’s research interests are in English as a Second Language (including the use of non-standard English for artistic expression), sociolinguistics, error analysis, translatology (especially translational stylistics), literary stylistics and anthropological linguistics. He has published widely in these areas worldwide in journals and books.

Professor Teilanyo has served as an External Examiner to different universities both at the undergraduate and the postgraduate levels. He has equally assessed numerous candidates for promotion to the professorial cadre. In addition, he has served as a Chairman or Member of Accreditation panels to different universities.

He belongs to several professional bodies. He is a Member of the English Scholars Association of Nigeria (ESAN); The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA); the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR); Institute of Chattered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC); Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM); American Studies Association of Nigeria (ASAN); International Association for Intercultural Communication Studies (IAICS): Institute of Multicultural Discourses (IMD); and the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL).

Professor Teilanyo has held several leadership positions during his educational career. Besides the numerous leadership positions he held as a pupil and a student, he has been the Assistant Dean, Faculty of Arts, University of Benin; Head, Department of English and Literature, University of Benin; and Pioneer Head, Department of Humanities, and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences both at Federal University, Otuoke. He has also been Director of Entrepreneurial and General Studies. He is the National Secretary, American Studies Association of Nigeria (ASAN), and Associate Editor of the Journal of the English Scholars Association of Nigeria (ESAN). Professor Teilanyo is a Fellow of both the Literary Society of Nigeria (FLSH) and the Chattered Institute of Personnel and Management Development (FCIPMD).

He is currently the Director, Centre for Continuing Education, Federal University Otuoke and Chairman of the Senate Business Committee of the same University. He is married with children.
