Prof. Osakue S. Omoera
Brief Profile
Prof Osakue Stevenson Omoera is a leading scholar in applied media, film, and theatre studies. The foci of his research are Nollywood studies, with an emphasis on indigenous language films; Media sociology, with an emphasis on the social impacts of the media; and Cultural dynamics, with stress on theatre and African performance studies, cultural communication and development communication. Credited with pioneering scholarly inquiry into Benin films in Nollywood studies, Omoera developed the “Active Volcano Paradigm” for studying English as a language of mass communication, concerning broadcast media news in Nigeria.
He has served as Jury President/Chairman, Edo Movie and Music Academy Awards, Benin City, 2013; Member of the Jury, Bayelsa International Film Festival (BIFF), Yenagoa, 2021; Head of Jury, Edo State International Film Festival (ESIFF), Benin City, Edo State, 2022, Jury President, Lagos International Film Festival (LIFF), 2023; Co-Chairman of Jury, Edo State International Film Festival (ESIFF), 2023. He is well-travelled and has published extensively in leading journals and specialist books.
He is a recipient of the Association for Cultural Studies (ACS), Finland grant (2018); the Shenzhen Forum Grant, Shenzhen University (SZU), China/National Communication Association (NCA), University of Colorado, Denver (2019); the Arts Council of the African Studies Association (ACASA), USA grant (2020); and the Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) at The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, Oslo, Norway Scholarship (2023), Goethe University Frankfurt Travel Grant (2024), among other laurels.
