Profile Of SIWES Directorate

The students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is the accepted skills training programme, which forms part of the approved Minimum Academic Standards in the various degree programmes for all the Nigerian Universities. The SIWES directorate is tasked with the Mandate of providing an avenue for students in Nigerian Universities to acquire industries skills and experience in their course of study. It provides students with the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work situation, thereby bridging the gap between University work and actual practice. The SIWES directorate achieves this mandate by collaborating with the Vice Chancellor, ITF, NUC and the various Organizations where students undertake their industrial training.

Objectives

The specific objectives of SIWES programme are:

    • Provide avenue for students of the University to acquire industrial skills and experience in their course of study;
    • Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery that may not be available in the University;
    • Make the transition from school to the world of work easier, and enhance students’ contacts for later job placement;
    • Provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work situation thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice; and
    • Enlist and strengthen employers’ involvement in the entire education process and prepare students for employment after graduation.

 

Our Activities

    1. Prepare and submit Master and Placement lists to NUC and ITF.
    2. Identify placement opportunities for students’ Industrial attachment with Employers.
    3. Organize orientation programmes for students to prepare them for Industrial Training.
    4. Supervise students on attachment and sign their logbooks.
    5. Attend to staff and students with difficulties during industrial training attachment.
    6. Assess students’ performance and award grades accordingly.
    7. Submit completed ITF form 8 to ITF at the end of the programme.
    8. Ensure that students’ logbooks are vetted and verified by ITF at the end of the programme.   
    9. Ensure regular Departmental Coordinators’/SIWES Committee meetings.
    10. Ensure regular attendance to the quarterly Zonal SIWES    Directors’/Coordinators’ meetings.
    11. Ensure the processing of SIWES programme participating staff and students’ payments   of   allowances.
    12. Fostering of close links between the university, ITF and industries participating in SIWES programme.
